While Floor did not survive the pandemic, many wonderful classes, workshops and events took place, including In the Rough, a new works in progress performance series that Tongue plans on continuing to produce. Later joined by Adrianna Audoma, the three opened Floor Center for Dance in St. In 2014 Gilliland and Lauren Smith formed Tongue Dance Project.

An advocate for dancers and emerging artists Gilliland has a strong commitment to teaching and community outreach and has been offering free community classes since1996. Gilliland began her teaching career in1980 and has served on the dance faculties of UC Riverside, UC Irvine, Loyola Marymount University, Mt San Jacinto College, Riverside Community College and the Idyllwild Arts Academy. Her work has been supported by numerous organizations including Dance USA, the Durfee Foundation, Los Angeles Cultural Affairs and the California Arts Council.
Gilliland is the recipient of a Creativity Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, a Dance Maker Grant from the James Irvine foundation and three Lester Horton awards for choreography and outstanding performance by a company. In Los Angeles, Gilliland was presented in a wide variety of venues including Highways Performance Space, the Luckman Theatre and the Getty Center. She has choreographed and produced numerous concerts and evening length works and has been presented throughout the United States and abroad including Scotland, Mexico, the Soviet Union and Canada. Since 1977 she has co-founded two dance collectives and created her own dance companies in New York and Southern California, most notably, TONGUE /contemporary dance based in Los Angeles from1996 to 2006.Ĭommitted to experimentation, exploration and deep creative process, Gilliland has developed her own movement system and approach to choreography which continues to evolve and grow in collaboration with her dancers and students. However not everything is school work, HBU offers amazing clubs and organizations where you can join depending on your best interests. You are able to schedule and appointment with them anytime, because they are willing to help. Not to mention that every class has a tutor who was a past student in the class that passed the class with an A. HBU is know for many things one of those being how helpful your professors will be! They want you to succeed as much as you want to succeed, therefore they will offer as much help. Forming closer relationships with professors and classmates is very doable because of this. Classes are smaller in size compared to other universities. Sophomore: As a upcoming sophomore in college I can say that HBU has been great my first year ! The environment is so welcoming and everyone who is around is willing to help.
This means that dorms are also massive, and the living conditions are sensational. Rice also has an enormous campus that rivals the Ivies while only having a total enrollment of under 7000 students.
Of course, I couldn't mention Rice without mentioning how good their academics are, and as a STEM student the classes are fast-paced yet easy to understand. Everyone in the student body is willing to get to know you and, as an introvert, I feel myself becoming more and more relaxed when hanging out and talking to other people. Rice is a super inclusive university, with only the best of the best as professors, and the people here are nicer than any other people I've ever met. However, even though I've only been here for a few weeks, I couldn't be happier. I was aiming for the Ivy Leagues and ended up at a college that I hadn't even heard of before the university application process.
Freshman: At first, I was a bit disappointed that I ended up at Rice University.
