An advocate for dancers and emerging artists Gilliland has a strong commitment to teaching and community outreach and has been offering free community classes since1996. Gilliland is the recipient of a Creativity Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, a Dance Maker Grant from the James Irvine foundation and three Lester Horton awards for choreography and outstanding performance by a company. In Los Angeles, Gilliland was presented in a wide variety of venues including Highways Performance Space, the Luckman Theatre and the Getty Center. She has choreographed and produced numerous concerts and evening length works and has been presented throughout the United States and abroad including Scotland, Mexico, the Soviet Union and Canada. Since 1977 she has co-founded two dance collectives and created her own dance companies in New York and Southern California, most notably, TONGUE /contemporary dance based in Los Angeles from1996 to 2006.Ĭommitted to experimentation, exploration and deep creative process, Gilliland has developed her own movement system and approach to choreography which continues to evolve and grow in collaboration with her dancers and students. Classes are smaller in size compared to other universities. Sophomore: As a upcoming sophomore in college I can say that HBU has been great my first year ! The environment is so welcoming and everyone who is around is willing to help.

Of course, I couldn't mention Rice without mentioning how good their academics are, and as a STEM student the classes are fast-paced yet easy to understand. Everyone in the student body is willing to get to know you and, as an introvert, I feel myself becoming more and more relaxed when hanging out and talking to other people. Rice is a super inclusive university, with only the best of the best as professors, and the people here are nicer than any other people I've ever met. However, even though I've only been here for a few weeks, I couldn't be happier. I was aiming for the Ivy Leagues and ended up at a college that I hadn't even heard of before the university application process.
